Horse Gram–Benefits

Horse gram is a legume of the tropics and subtropics, grown mostly under dry-land agriculture. It is grown and used mainly in South India.It is called as Kollu in tamil . Horse gram is high in protein and iron, which makes it a wholesome food that should be added to our diet on a regular basis.Horse gram is a reddish brown legume with many health benefits. It is rich in taste and at the same time provides you many nutritional benefits. Hence it is one of the favorite food for all walks of people.

As it is a grain with rich amounts of proteins, vitamins and iron it is believed that it can reduce the extra fats in the body along with the help of reducing weight.It is having good amounts of B-complex vitamin and proteins.  It aids in purifying menstruation and prevents and cures the arthritis. The high amount of dietary fiber present in the horse gram balances the blood pressure and sugar glucose levels.

Nutritional Facts:

It has calcium, molybdenum, polyphenols, flavonoids, which have high antioxidant capacity and hemagglutinin substance that causes red blood cells to agglutinate.Apart from these, it has carbohydrates, fats, minerals, phosphorus, carotenes and nicotinic acid. Like other legumes, it is deficient in methoioine and tryptophan. It is bitter and acrid to taste.Here is the nutritional fact for 100 gm of this legume:

Health benefits of Horse Gram:

  1. Horse Gram water is prescribed for treating jaundice. This water is also used for relieving cough and cold. Horse gram liquid is also used to regulate fever.
  2. Applying a paste of powdered Horse Gram along with some water on the skin helps to control boils and skin rashes.The lipid extracts of Horse Gram are beneficial for treating peptic ulcer.
  3. It is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine for treating numerous health disorders including rheumatism, worm, conjunctivitis and piles.It is beneficial for pregnant women as it helps to increase the body’s blood count.
  4. Similarly to control the bleeding after pregnancy horse gram works well. Women can daily intake one table spoon of horse gram powder in the early morning on empty stomach to improve the overall health.
  5. Weight Loss can be done by boiling horse gram until tender and add it to your daily diet. Please note that it takes longer to cook than other dals. Soaking for a while and cooking in a pressure cooker helps to cook it faster.Powder and add it to soups to get all the nutritional benefits and burn fat.Soak the horse gram dal for 8-10 hours and sprout the seeds to increase the nutritional value.
  6. Horse gram is recommended for treating kidney stones in India.Soak about 4 teaspoons of Horse gram in approximately 1.5 cups of water overnight and drink the water in the water on an empty stomach the next morning.You can add the same amount of water to the  horse gram again and let it soak and can drink the water in the afternoon and repeat this and drink in the evening as well.Taking horse gram water this way for 2-3 months will help in completely eliminating the kidney stones.

      Horse gram is a variety of nut Just like pista, cashew and almond.. It is rich in.protein and iron.
      Everyone says that having honey in water with.empty stomach will.reduce weight and remove all unwanted fats..
      Ya its true.. I had an experience..
      Similarly I tried horse gram too..
      What we have to do is,soak the horse gram for 2 hours and put in a pressure cooker for more than 7 whistles.. Then eat.. As u wish add little sugar and coconut..
      The boiled water in the pressure cooker is very best when have it in empty stomach..
      When u powder this horse gram and add along with idly podi, or some poriyal..
      If u take regularly for one month surely u will reduce 4-5 kg.. I am guarantee for this..

        • No no.. Boiled water in empty stomach is good.. For one cup horse gram.u need.to take 2 cups of water.. Since we r giving 5 to.6 whistles..

          • It is available in packets.. So buy 250 gram packs and have it daily during noon or evening with tea..

    Do i have to eat horsegram every day? Because i heard it generates a lot of heat in your stomach which is bad for you, so did you eat every day?

    • I continually ate one month.. No lunch at all.. Fruits in the morning and night.. I got better results.. Since I ate fruits I didn’t find any heat in body..

        • Actually my weight was 64 kg.. I ate this with coconut and karupatti.. After one month my weight reduced to 56 kg.. Really I was surprised.. Even my doctor..

          • woow, that much weight reduced, is pretty awesome. So what i will do is take 250g of horse gram and soak it in water overnight, then i will boil it in water and drink that water in the morning before breakfast, i can eat the horse gram at lunch time, is that ok?

          • Nothin spl, just put it in mixie and powder it.. Nowadays everything available in shop.. Just Sterday my friend bought horse gram juice extract and gooseberry juice extract..

    1: boil horse gram and then drink that water or
    2: put horse gram powder in the hot water and then drink it

  5. The shop here has black horse gram. Did you eat the different coloured horse gram or the black coloured horse gram?

        • In black, so many stones will be there and it need to whistles 7-8.. Coloured doesn’t have stones.. But both are equal in nutritional benefits.. If u have patience try black horse gram.. Nothing difference in both
